Margaret Larson:  KING 5's New Day Northwest and Be the Spark's Emcee

I just wanted to thank you so much for allowing me to be part of the "Be the Spark" event! It was truly one of the best community events I've ever seen.  There was so much genuine joy and kindness and passion!!

Congratulations for a job VERY well done!

@margaretnewday #BetheSpark in Tacoma is one of the best things I've ever seen a community do for its future! I love #Tacoma!!!!

Jim and Denise:

Jim and I send our heartiest congratulations to you and the GTCF re:  Be the Spark!!!

Jim, Lauren, Everett, and I attended the event.  From the moment we landed at Pacific Grill for a small pre-event supper, we could feel the energy build up and down Pacific Avenue.  We arrived at 4:30pm per Lauren's advice, getting an early and leisurely start.  Noticed all kinds of purposeful walking south from our window vantage point.

When we arrived at Pacific Grill, there was a buzz up and down Pacific Avenue.  When we left for the Dome at 6:45 a full-blown tour de force could be felt up and down the Ave. People were afoot to the Dome, cars lined up to 11th, light rail filled to capacity.  Metro staff were on hand to advise us to cross the tracks and head back to Commerce on empty trains to insure a space going to the Dome.

People were absolutely in-the-zone already connecting deeply with the message of the evening.  It was truly wonderful to feel the community energy of unity and shared commitment.  Walking up to the Dome from the Transit Station, I remarked to Jim that I felt like I was on a pilgrimage.  The youth focus of the program  couldn't have been more on-the-mark!

Participation was rich and diverse...

As I read the background work that had been done facilitating community conversation among the young, in their schools... though I had a very early start at the VA on Saturday I was up until midnight soaking it up.  Really, really, really, warmed the very fibers of my heart...

Gratitude to you, the GTCF and the many community partners who collaborated to make this happen.   A work of art!

Denise:

Just wanted to say a big THANKS for bringing Demond Tutu to Tacoma. It was a night that my sons (19 &17), husband and I will not forget. My husband is a homicide detective and often sees the bad side of Tacoma. Last Friday we were both proud to be part of this city.

Janne Hutchins, Executive Director, LASA

On Friday night I was fortunate enough to hear Desmond Tutu speak at a sold out program at the Tacoma Dome. He was invited to Tacoma by the Greater Tacoma Foundation in part to help empower youth to in his words Be The Spark.  The rest of the weekend I saw the spark in action, On Saturday and Sunday Christ Lutheran volunteers worked on the administrative offices of the Lakewood Area Shelter Assn and gave us a face lift with beauty bark weeding etc. Drive by us at 8956 Gravelly Lake Drive. We look great!

Sunday night the Lakewood Lions took over the Lakewood Playhouse ‘s performance of the Lion in Winter with any profits going to LASA’s new van. It just goes to show that we are lucky to live in an area that already has plenty of spark!
